Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club

A royal renovation

Established in 1894, The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC) is a sports club located in the Causeway Bay area of southern Hong Kong. It is renowned for its sailing and rowing, and is one of the oldest sports clubs in the region. Gleeds is providing project and programme management services on the new staff building, as well as a complete renovation of the existing historic facilities.

The new building sits directly above a major underground tunnel and requires strict management and monitoring of site levels, with a 2mm tolerance permissible during foundation excavation works.

Once complete, the club facilities will include:

  • New kitchens
  • Restaurants and bars
  • Gym
  • Squash courts
  • Bowling alley
  • Commercial space
  • An extended pier
  • Boat yard workshops

Providing innovative solutions

Home to the Hong Kong to Vietnam Boat Race and the Rolex China Sea Race, the RHKYC is one of the oldest and most prestigious member clubs in the region.

Due to unforeseen site conditions within the original building, Gleeds worked closely with the supply chain to implement:

  • A collaborative approach between architect and engineer, facilitating design alterations to better suit club operations, and safeguard against potential future maintenance works
  • Supply chain management procedures to ensure programme delivery on schedule
  • Improvements to construction methodology
