National Museum of Qatar

A symbol of Qatari heritage.

In 2012 Gleeds was appointed to cost manage the construction of the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ); a magnificent public gallery situated on a 140,000m2 site across from the Doha Corniche. The completed building will offer visitors access to a new world-class museum and research facility. Clad within an ultramodern exterior, the new building is designed to share the story of Qatar’s past, present and future.

A unique design

Designed by Pritzker Prize winner, Jean Nouvel, the NMoQ’s magnificent structure is inspired by a mineral formation known as the ‘desert rose’, commonly found beneath the deserts of the Gulf region. The façade is shaped by a collection of interlocking disks, each of a different size and curvature, giving the building’s appearance a blossoming effect.

Qatar’s hot and arid weather made temperature regulation a priority. Deep overhangs on the disk structures will create cool and shady space for outdoor paths, whilst protecting the interior from sunlight and heat.

International involvement

This prestigious project has brought together design and construction expertise from all over the world, uniting specialist expertise into one global construction team. This diversity has offered unique opportunities for innovation and new working practices.

Gleeds’ team of cost managers are working closely with the architect and contractor to control project costs and help the building achieve its target of LEED® silver certification status.

Thanks to its location and size, NMoQ will be the first monument seen by visitors arriving in Qatar from the New Doha International Airport.
