DHL North Asia Hub

Delivering DHL’s largest ever hub – on time and on budget.

Gleeds worked with the logistics leader and Shanghai Airport Authority to create the biggest facility in the company’s history.

Our project management services, solution driven approach and rigorous planning ensured the 88,000mNorth Asia hub was delivered on time and on budget, despite delays and higher prices caused by the global financial crisis.

Shorter transit times, faster access

Currently in 3rd position, Shanghai Pudong is expected to become the world’s busiest cargo airport by 2015. Sitting on its boundary, the new facility our team helped create means DHL can better serve high demand routes across the world. The complex construction project involved:

  • A 55,000m2 warehouse
  • A fully integrated, automated parcel-handling system
  • A 2-storey office block
  • All roads and utilities
  • Employee restaurant
  • Customs area

DHL

North Asian Hub can process up to 20,000 documents and 20,000 parcels an hour

A package of measures

We met a tight opening deadline, despite an 18-month delay caused by the economic situation that had raised inflation and material costs. To achieve this on budget we:

  • Rescheduled resources
  • Worked with DHL to modify the scope of works
  • Navigated a complex approval/permit system
  • Undertook rigorous planning
  • Provided cost-effective solutions and value engineering
  • Adopted a hands-on approach

Going the extra mile

Due to the location of the hub, we placed a large team on-site to focus not only on usual activities but to ensure construction had no impact on the operating airport or adjacent runway.
